What do you do when you live in a small space? You have dedicated zones (that sometimes overlap)! I’d like to introduce you to our bedroom, my home gym, and my home office (plus the laundry room when the bottom cabinet is open). My exercise routine before moving into the RV honestly looks much the same as it does now. I usually follow online fitness classes or videos with dumbbell weights and resistance bands. When we sold our house, we also sold all of our individual dumbbells and their stand. To replace it, we got two adjustable sets. They don’t have a permanent home yet, but for now they work well under the foot of our bed. The yoga mat gets rolled up and tucked away. Is it a lot of space? No, definitely not. Do I need to be careful not to hit the ceiling with dumbbell snatches? Yes, absolutely. Does it work for my needs? Also, yes! When it comes to a fitness routine in an RV, I’ve learned that flexibility is key. Exercising outside isn’t always a good option (hello, tick-infested grass, mosquitos, and uneven ground) and the living room is sometimes occupied with the kids. This space is small, but it’s always available to me.
Then we shift into office mode! I replaced my standard desktop monitors for a portable one (that’s essentially just a large tablet screen on a separate stand). Even when we were in the house with a large home office, I still prefered my laptop over a keyboard and mouse, so no changes there. The Brinkley dresser has a pull-forward top, so we ordered the extra piece that fits along the back to transform it into a large workspace (though it didn’t fit and we still had to cut it down to size). Finish it off with a chair and I’m good to go! Dustin is always reminding me that I have a laptop (and now a portable monitor) so I can work from anywhere in the RV or outside, but I’m a creature of habit and I work best in the same dedicated work environment, so here I am!
Of course at night and during the weekends this space turns back into a regular bedroom with a dresser. The monitor and laptop can get tucked away in a cabinet and the chair returns to the living room. The desktop piece gets tucked away, and boom, new space. The longer we spend in this space, the more we come to love it and call it HOME.
