We spent a weekend in Alamogordo, NM. Why there? We visited White Sands National Park! It was so beautiful with the miles of white sandy hills stretching out with the mountains in the background. We went for a sunset stroll the first night and it was awesome when the sun hit the mountains in the distance. Kai and Reya had SO much fun running around and climbing the hills. I tagged along for a bit on the informational tour about White Sands and learned that there used to be another gypsum sand area similar to White Sands nearby that ended up losing it’s water table and blowing away. The water table is what sits below the surface of the sand (1-3 feet at White Sands) to help the sand stick together. Crazy to think that if we’re not careful, White Sands could be lost as well.

Then we went back the next day to do some hiking and explore a bit more. The trail we went on had signposts along the way to give information about the trail, and they each had a cute illustration of a kit fox named Katie. Kai and Reya really enjoyed running to each sign to find Katie and (sometimes) hear about what the sign said! We also rented sleds to sled down the sand, which was tough but fun.

After White Sands when we returned to the campground we noticed a pretty amazing sunset, so we sat down to watch. I was able to capture a bit of the sunset on the side of the Brinkley. It’s a bit odd to see it with a splash of color! Overall we would recommend White Sands National Park.
